Julia Maier's post

The following is Julia Maier's post:

"1.3 104-145

When Polonius demands that Ophelia end her relationship with Hamlet, is Polonius looking to protect himself or his daughter? While Polonius may have Ophelia’s best interest at heart, he treats her as though she is his subject, not his daughter. Polonius’ stern demeanor may come from love for his daughter. From Ophelia’s point of view, however, he is condescending. Often being told not to do something by a parent makes a son or daughter want to do exactly the opposite. It will be interesting to see if Ophelia follows her father’s commands, or if she continues her relationship with Hamlet. Similar father-daughter dynamics exist today contributing to the timelessness of Shakespeare’s work."
