1.2 133-163

Why does Hamelt feel like he has to hold his tongue?

In the answers I recieved, almost everyone replied saying that Hamlet does not feel safe in the kingdom and especially not with Claudius. Claudius's lack of sensitivity and care for Hamlet is evident in his speech where he states that Hamlet's grief "'Tis unmanly grief" (1.2.98). Rather than comforting Hamlet, Claudius only worsens the situation with insults and insensitive comments so it is understandable that Hamlet does not feel comfortable speaking his mind in the presence of Claudius. A point I had not thought about before is that Hamlet does not reveal his suspicions because he may feel some filial duty towards Claudius and his mother. Though I'm not sure whether or not this is true yet, it is a plausible idea and lends depth towards Hamlet's already multifaceted personality.
